Roller Coaster Season for Omer Riza and Trabzonspor
Club's fall and rise mirror's Omer's injury and recovery
May 25th saw the end of the Turkish League's 2006-7 season - one which had been something of a roller coaster ride for both Omer and his club. After the previous season's 4th place, triumph in the TSYD Cup Final, and a successful July tour in Germany (4 wins and a draw), a perhaps over-worked Trabzonspor got off to a disappointing start in August with 2 losses and a draw.
However, the team's cohesion returned and in another six league games it had climbed from 17th to 4th in the League. Then came disaster! In an away game at Genclebirligi on 20th October Omer suffered a crippling injury. After an MRI scan the next day, he was flown home to Britain to have an operation on his ankle.
After a period of recuperation he returned to training at Trabzonspor on 16th January, but it was another two months before he was back in the team, having missed 14 games.In that time his team had plunged back to 15th place and then recovered somewhat to 9th.
Omer's return soon showed just how important his contribution is as the club steadily climbed upwards to finish back at 4th place. Who can say what their position would have been if Omer had been able to play throughout the season?
Omer’s great contribution to the team is not only his own goal-scoring, but his ability to so disorganise the opposing defences that his team-mates have greater scoring opportunities - opportunities which they sorely missed during his absence.
